SOYBEANS
Soy is an oilseed that represents 56% of the area planted with grains in Brazil (Conab 2020/21), and is one of the most used sources of protein in animal feed, intended for poultry, pigs and cattle and with increasing consumption in human food. Brazil is considered one of the last agricultural frontiers available to expand the cultivated area and capable of supplying world demand, according to population growth. Soy cultivation is essential for the production system. It enables crop rotation and no-till on straw, assists in biological nitrogen fixation and nutrient recycling in soil.
CORN
Corn is the energy base for feeding poultry, pigs and cattle and is intended for human consumption. it produces a large amount of straw that helps protect the soil, recycle nutrients and increase organic matter in the soil.
WHEAT
Wheat is one of the most important staple food grains and an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, vitamins, iron and magnesium. Wheat is also known to have a higher protein content than other major cereals such as maize or rice. Wheat is a cereal grain mostly eaten in the form of bread in different parts of the world. Thus, the global demand for wheat export is on the rise.
LENTILS
Lentils are rich in fiber, minerals, proteins and vitamins and Canada is one of the leading producers and exporters of green lentil. The fiber lowers blood cholesterol levels and reduces heart diseases. It helps those with diabetes and hyperglycemia by stabilizing their blood glucose levels. Lentils are designated into two classes, Red Lentils and Lentils other than red. The method of determining the class of a lentil is by seed coat colour. Red lentils may be confirmed by the cotyledon colour. Lentil varieties may have a wide range of seed coat colours from green, red, speckled green, black and tan. The cotyledon color may be red, yellow or green.
BARLEY
General purpose barley is primarily used for feed. Due to its high starch and protein content barley is regularly used as feed in local cattle, dairy cow and hog operations—in fact, over 50 per cent of Canada’s barley is used for feed. Historically, Canadian feed barley has primarily been exported to Japan and Saudi Arabia. Now, there is a significant opportunity to export Canadian feed barley to China.
